When it comes to fitness, there are many reasons seniors should exercise regularly and try their best to stay fit. Exercise can help maintain or build muscle and bone strength as well as reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. In honor of the 26th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day, Waltonwood Ashburn is hosting free exercise classes and a 1K fun run or walk on Wednesday, May 29th at the senior living community (located at 44141 Russell Branch Pkwy). The public is invited to try the community’s popular water aerobics class in the only saltwater therapy pool in Loudoun County. The class will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by the fun run or walk at 10:30 a.m., and the community will end the event with a balance training class at 1 p.m. Pro Healthcare Servicing LLC will provide free blood pressure screenings, and instructors with Waltonwood Ashburn’s Forever Fit Program will offer information about different classes and services provided at the senior living community. Participants will also have the opportunity to purchase snacks from a Chick-fil-a truck. Waltonwood Ashburn is honored to celebrate National Health and Fitness Day for the third year. Anyone interested in attending the free and public event should RSVP by calling 571-918-4854.
One of the residents who enjoys the saltwater therapy pool is Jean Marcotte, who starts most of her days with water aerobics. Marcotte, 80, has been living at Waltonwood Ashburn since the community opened and enjoys the variety of exercise classes and other activities the senior living community offers.
“I go to the pool at least three times a week. It’s a wonderful way to start my day,” said Marcotte. “I participate in other fitness classes and walk with my husband regularly, but the water aerobics class is my favorite. There are many health benefits that come with exercising. I feel stronger, it boosts my mood and enhances my mobility. I’m excited to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day at the community and hope other residents and the public come out and give the classes a try.”
Saltwater has many benefits, including enhanced mental and physical wellness and comfort. In addition, regular saltwater pool visits can soften and smooth skin and reduce stress. Physical wellbeing of the residents is a top priority at Waltonwood Ashburn. The senior living community works closely with physical therapists and physicians to provide tailored activities which fit both the needs and schedules of the community’s residents.
“As we age, it’s important to keep moving, because exercise can go a long way in sustaining health,” said Justin Roberts, executive director of Waltonwood at Ashburn. “During each exercise program, our forever fit coordinator will offer a customized exercise experience suitable for each resident. These sessions focus on safe and effective strategies which work out the entire body and promote a better quality of life. We are proud to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day and offer classes for the public to try.”
Every year, the goal of National Senior Health and Fitness Day is to help promote active and healthy lifestyles for older adults. The theme this year is “With Movement There’s Improvement,” which stresses the importance of regular exercise no matter how old you are.
